Healthy You Series - Sleep Health From A to Zzzz

Tuesday, September 18 -- 7:00 pm

Michael Weinstein, M.D., Pulmonologist and Medical Director of the Crozer-Keystone Sleep Center at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, will give a presentation about maximizing your sleep health.

The Haverford Township Free Library has teamed up with Crozer-Keystone Health System to present this series of programs on health topics that effect you and your loved ones. 

The series will continue in October and November with:

November 28th --  Understanding Diabetes

Planning for the Inevitable: Funeral Planning

College Planning, Wedding Planning - What's the Missing Piece?

Funeral planning—Morbid? No.
Practical? Yes!

Shane Couturier of the Society for Financial Awareness (SOFA) will
present and lead a discussion about a topic that we all avoid—how to plan a funeral.

Join us to get practical and useful advice for planning the inevitable.

This program is free and open to the public. No registration required.

This program is made possible through a partnership between HTFL and Surrey Services of Havertown.


Civil War Book Discussion Series

Sunday, September 9 -- 2:00 pm


Join us for this 3-session book discussion series. The series will include both non-fiction and fiction titles that explore issues such as causes of the Civil War, key battles, as well as the perspectives and experiences of Confederate and Union leaders and soldiers. Discussions will be led by historian and author Andrew Miller.


This month's selection is  Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid that Sparked the Civil War by Tony Horwitz.

The Series will continue in October and November with:

October 14 - Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
November 11 - The Winter Soldiers by Andrew Miller

Cookbook Club

Monday, September 10 -- 6:30 pm

We’re giving “book club” a new meaning!

Join us for The Cookbook Club and sample recipes from a selected cookbook. Each participant should prepare a recipe of their choice from this month’s selection, Slow Cooker Revolution.

Stop by the Reference Desk to browse Slow Cooker Revolution, select a recipe, sign up for the club and bring your recipe to share on Monday night, September 10. Make a free copy of your recipe and get ready to cook!

This program will continue in October with Betty Crocker Just Cupcakes and November with Cooking With Your Friends: A Collection of Recipes by The Friends of the Haverford Township Free Library.

**Childrens' Programs Begin!


Fall programming begins Monday, September 10 for children Birth - 5th grade.  Come check out our storytimes and programs for elementary-aged schoolers.


Toddler and Preschool Storytime - Mondays -- 10:15 am
Offers stories, songs, art activities, and educational play for 2, 3 and 4 year olds and their caregivers.

Circle Time - Tuesdays -- 10:15 am
A 20-minute rhyme and movement intensive program for children of all ages. The program provides wiggles and giggles for all!

Books and Babies - Wednesdays -- 10:15 am
A fun-filled 20-minute storytime program for our youngest customers. The programs are fun for babies and parents alike!

Creative Corner - Thursdays -- 1:30 pm
Offers older preschoolers, ages 4 and 5, the opportunity to have fun, stretch their creative muscles, and enjoy dramatic play.

Pajama Storytime - 2nd Monday of the Month -- 7:00 pm
(September 10, October 8, November 12)
Snuggle up for Pajama Storytime! Enjoy good night tales with Ms. Yolaine before heading to bed.  This program is for children of all ages and their families.

LEGO Club - Wednesdays -- 4:00 pm
Join Ms. Shannon and find out each week's special test of your skills.  Please leave personal LEGOs at home.  For kids in grades K-5.

Gross Out Factory - 2nd Tuesday of the Month - 4:00 pm
(September 11, October 9, November 13)
Create props to (harmlessly) prank your friends and family!  For kids in grades K-5. 

Book Bingo - 2nd Thursday of the Month - 4:00 pm
(September 13, October 11, November 8)
Come for Bingo, leave with great books to add to your personal library.  For kids in grades K-5.


**Family Place Parent & Child Workshop

Thursdays in October -- 10:00 am

The Family Place Parent & Child Workshop is a playgroup for kids ages 1-3* and a fun-filled program experience for caregivers that includes health and child-development information from experts.

Purpose of the Program: Each program features free play, an art activity, and great resources for parents. Spend quality time playing with your child in a safe, fun, interactive environment and connect with community professionals and other parents.

Workshop Centers Include: Puzzles and building, Gross motor equipment, Dramatic play, Musical instruments, Books and reading, Art activity, Parent resources.

Benefits: Help your child get ready to read, meet healthcare and child-development professionals such as nutritionists, speech pathologists, music and movement experts.  Spend quality time together, obtain parent resources.

Those interested in participating** in the Workshop must REGISTER in advance and space is limited. Registration is for the full series of four-weeks, please plan to attend all sessions.

*Younger siblings and older siblings up to kindergarten age are welcome to attend along with your 1-3 year old.

Check out all of the Teen clubs this fall.

Anime Club - Mondays -- 3:00 pm
We screen anime tv series and movies.  We try to feature Japanese culture, crafts, and food too!

Gaming Club - Wednesdays -- 3:00 pm
It doesn't matter your skill level, we want to see all gamers at this club!  The third Wednesday of the month will always feature a tournament!  Come by to win prizes.

Graphic Novel Club - Thursdays -- 3:00 pm
An art club with a focus on that charming sequential medium (her-hem comics).   We'll letter, ink, and pencil with the best of them this fall!


Smile! -- Raina Telgemeier Visits Teen Graphic Novel Club

Monday, September 24 -- 3:00 pm

You heard that right – Eisner Award winning graphic novelist, Raina Telgemeier is coming HERE!

Her book, Smile, a critically acclaimed graphic memoir, was a New York Times bestseller and winner of the Will Eisner Award for Best Publication for Teens, and received a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. Raina also adapted and illustrated "The Baby-sitters Club" graphic novels, which were selected for YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list and Booklist’s Top 10 Graphic Novels for Youth list. Raina lives in Astoria, New York, with her husband and fellow comics artist, Dave Roman. To learn more, visit her online at

Raina’s presentation is for geared to teens in grades 6 and up. She’ll be talking about her newest book, Drama, the process of writing her graphic novels, drawing and signing books!

The 2012 Haverford Music Festival, an all day, family-oriented event, presents continuous live music with free admission to all venues from noon to 9:30 pm on Saturday, September 15, 2012 in the Oakmont business area of Havertown. Food, beverages, and information are provided by festival vendors/sponsors. As the festival organizer, the Haverford Township Civic Council benefits from festival proceeds and uses those proceeds to fund community-based programs within Haverford Township.
